Location

São Tomé and Príncipe is an Afro-Atlantic arguipelago made up of two islands (São Tomé Island and Príncipe Island) and several islets. STP is divided into seven administrative districts (Agua-grande, Mezoshi, Lobata, Lembá, Caué, Cantagalo and Pagué. Since 1995 Principe island became an Autonomous Region. The distance between the two islands is about 140 km (45 minutes by flight). Located in the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean, to the west of the African continent, STP is about 315 km from Libreville, Gabon (about 1 hour and 20 minutes flight), 790 km from Lagos, Nigeria (1 hour and 45 minutes flight) 963 km from Accra, Ghana (2 hours flight) and 437 km from Equatorial Guinea (1 hour and 20 minutes flight).​​​​​​​​​​

Climate

The climate in São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) is equatorial, characterized by hot and humid conditions. Average annual temperatures range between 22 ºC and 30 ºC. The climate is divided into two main microclimates, which lead to two distinct seasons determined by rainfall levels.  The rainy season, which is the longest, typically occurs from September to May. In contrast, the dry season, locally known as “Gravana,” takes place between July and August.  The southern part of the island experiences the highest levels of rainfall, with periods of rain occasionally occurring even during the dry season. In contrast, the northern region receives the least amount of rainfall.

People and Culture

STP is home to approximately 235,000 residents. During the colonial period, the islands, originally uninhabited, became populated by many enslaved individuals and hired workers from Cape Verde, Cameroon, Angola, Mozambique, and Brazil. This convergence of diverse cultures and backgrounds has fostered the development of a warm and welcoming population, resulting in a rich and varied cultural heritage.
