CONTEXT

São Tomé and Príncipe is recognized as one of the most remarkable island destinations globally, distinguished by its humid tropical climate, lush landscapes, and ancient forests that provide a natural habitat for endemic species. The archipelago boasts a unique array of biodiversity, complemented by stunning rock formations and beaches characterized by crystal-clear waters and mild temperatures year-round. Nevertheless, São Tomé and Príncipe has significant potential yet to be realized to emerge as a premier destination that can contribute fully to the national economy and enhance the living conditions of its inhabitants. Tourism currently accounts for approximately 15% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employs around 16% of the population.

Amusement Parks

The entertainment and leisure segment constitutes a notable weakness within the tourism sector of São Tomé and Príncipe (STP). Projections indicate that by the year 2030, the country has the potential to attract approximately 50,000 tourists, thereby generating an estimated annual revenue of around 62 million US dollars. However, the available entertainment offerings are considerably limited, particularly due to the lack of well-equipped amusement parks that cater to individuals of all ages. Given the public's evident interest in recreational activities, the establishment of a theme park or a multi-park concept that integrates nature within local communities represents a viable investment opportunity. This initiative has the potential to create an engaging environment that offers a meaningful alternative to daily routines, thereby fostering family interaction. Moreover, such a project could significantly enhance community integration within the broader context of national economic development promoting greater equality of opportunity. It would also increase the attractiveness of these communities while generating employment opportunities, effectively addressing the critical issue of rural depopulation. While the initial investment required may be considerable, the potential benefits are likely to be substantial and far-reaching.

Airlines

Tourism and agriculture are two of the main economic activities in the country. Since São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) is primarily an agricultural nation, it is also a popular tourist destination.  By 2030, STP expects to welcome around 345,000 tourists. However, one of the challenges facing tourism in the country is the lack of diversification. As people increasingly seek opportunities to connect with nature and rural life—to learn about the origins of their food and the relationship between agriculture and the environment—agri-tourism is gaining popularity. This trend, along with the relative ease of obtaining arable land in the country presents a unique opportunity to combine agriculture and tourism, potentially generating significant revenue by offering a distinct product to this growing market niche. To succeed in this endeavor, it is crucial to collaborate with knowledgeable professionals who can provide credible guidance and advice.

Water Recreational Activities

The maritime territory of STP is approximately 160 times larger than the surface area of the land mass. This unique region is characterized by an expansive, pristine tropical rainforest that fosters immersive wilderness experiences, as well as calm, crystal-clear waters maintained at mild temperatures throughout the year. Such conditions create an optimal environment for engaging in sports that integrate both the sea and nature. The scope of tourist activities in the region is largely confined to excursions around the islands. Conversely, the sub-sector dedicated to water sports and recreational activities remains almost non-existent within the country, thereby restricting the variety of offerings available. Given that the primary asset of these islands, situated in the heart of the Atlantic, is their vast maritime expanse, there exists significant potential for a diverse range of both exhilarating and tranquil water-based activities. These include bodyboarding, flyboarding, windsurfing, sport fishing, kitesurfing, and diving, among others. Investment initiatives aimed at this sub-sector may not necessitate substantial financial resources. However, the low level of competition presents a noteworthy opportunity for extraordinary benefits, both financially and in terms of the overall development of this industry, which is recognized as vital for the country's growth.

Cable Car Rides

São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) possesses a rich array of tourism resources, providing significant opportunities to enhance the sector's attractiveness. This favorable environment sets the stage for the implementation of creative and innovative initiatives. A particularly promising concept is the construction of cable cars, which would enable visitors to appreciate the verdant landscapes that define tourism in STP. This initiative signifies a fundamental transformation in the approach to tourism on the islands. The proposed cable car system, designed for comfort and equipped with air conditioning, would be strategically positioned to serve both tourists and residents, thus offering a unique and immersive experience for exploring the region. Beyond its primary function of transportation, the cable car could accommodate a diverse range of programs, including themed discussions, entertainment activities, and performances, effectively establishing itself as a distinctive tourist attraction. From an economic perspective, the anticipated demand for an innovative venture such as the cable car is expected to generate sufficient revenue to cover operating expenses, thereby ensuring a considerable return on investment.

Eco-Hotel

As previously noted, in addition to the expansive maritime environment, São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) boasts pristine virgin rainforests that provide an immersive experience in nature. Despite the existence of certain initiatives, particularly on Príncipe Island, which has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, there remains considerable potential for enhancement within this sector. The current offerings are somewhat limited regarding attractions and recreational activities, which poses challenges for visitors seeking a more authentic experience. To improve the business model and cultivate a more innovative and engaging approach, it is advantageous to integrate eco-hotel accommodations with activities such as sport fishing, the processing and consumption of local products, agriculture, eco-tours, events, and interpretive centers. This combination of activities can present visitors with a varied itinerary, ensuring both enjoyment and relaxation while mitigating the risk of boredom. Such a strategy has the potential to generate substantial revenue and create employment opportunities, thereby fostering equity for the surrounding rural populations.
